Deakin's Bachelor of Science allows you to start with a broad science education program then specialise as you progress through the course, developing your interests and career aspirations.
Science at Deakin is not just about laboratory work, but prepares you for a range of real-life settings in which today's science graduates work. You will gain experience through practical programs undertaken in modern teaching laboratories.
The course is available as a single degree course or as a combined degree course with Arts, Commerce, Law and Teaching (Science). Approved major sequences within the Bachelor of Science include Animal Biology, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry and Materials Science, Environmental Science, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Freshwater Biology, Human Biology, Mathematical Modelling, Natural History and Plant Biology. As part of the course you will complete a Laboratory Safety and Fieldwork Induction Program. You will also be required to complete a Community Science Project, plus you will have an opportunity to undertake an optional Industry-Based Learning placement, which will provide you with valuable work experience, giving you the opportunity to apply and consolidate what you are learning in your course, as well as experience workplace culture and workplace practices, explore career options and develop a professional network.
Units in the course may include assessment hurdle requirements.
Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is considered a standard full time load for one year. Each unit you study has an EFTSL value. You can add these together to calculate your study load each year. Depending on enrolment, you may be enrolled in more than or less than the one EFTSL each year.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
Under the present legislation, a Commonwealth supported place is one for which the University receives some Government funding. Students enrolled in these places are required to contribute part of their course costs. To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place you must be an Australian citizen, or New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.
Full-fee paying (FFP)
A full-fee paying place is one which the University does not receive any Government funding. Students enrolled in these places contribute the full cost of their course.
Domestic full-fee paying places are available to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.
Fee information for all domestic students
The current Federal Government has proposed a number of major reforms for the higher education sector (see the Higher Education and Research Reform Amendment Bill 2014), including fee deregulation in respect of domestic student fees. This legislation may be reintroduced to the parliament in the latter half of 2015 and if passed, will impact on the CSP and FFP course fees applicable in 2016.

It has been calculated on the basis of a typical enrolment of a student undertaking the course in 2015, and reflects the cost involved in undertaking full-time study within the specified discipline. The 2016 CSP and FFP course fees may change if the Commonwealth Government's proposed fee deregulation and reforms legislation is passed.
The actual fees charged by Deakin University, will depend on the individual unit discipline and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. The cost of each unit offered in 2016 can be viewed from the Unit Search. Should a change in Government policy affect the cost of units offered, the website will be updated as soon as possible.
The fees per unit/credit point may be otherwise subject to an annual increase due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.

Fee payment assistance

Graduates of this course may find career opportunities in government institutions, in roles such as quality assurance, occupational health and safety, research, planning, management or marketing; science related industries, working in pharmaceutical production or pharmaceutical sales; biomedical science areas such as research or hospital and laboratory science; quality assurance in analytical and diagnostic laboratories; the food industry in quality control; environment and natural resources, fisheries resource management, aquaculture management, teaching, information technology, mathematics or science journalism to name a few.
To complete the Bachelor of Science, students must attain 24 credit points. Most units (think of units as ‘subjects’) are equal to 1 credit point. So that means in order to gain 24 credit points, you’ll need to study 24 units (AKA ‘subjects’) over your entire degree. Most students choose to study 4 units per trimester, and usually undertake two trimesters each year.
The 24 credit points include 8 core units (these are compulsory), 10 elective units (you can choose which ones to study) and 6 units from a major study (you will be required to complete at least one major).

The major sequences in Fisheries and Aquaculture and Freshwater Biology are only available at the Warrnambool Campus. Warrnambool students may also complete the Mathematical Modelling major which is offered cloud (online). Students who wish to complete the freshwater biology or fisheries and aquaculture major may commence their study at Melbourne Burwood Campus or Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus and then relocate to the Warrnambool Campus to complete the requirements of these majors.

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to undergraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Entry requirements - specific
Applicants should have successfully completed VCE or equivalent. Refer to the VTAC Guide for the latest pre-requisite information www.vtac.edu.au
Those aged 21 or over on 1 January and who do not hold VCE or equivalent should apply under Alternative Admission. This category is open to those who do not satisfy normal entrance requirements, but can demonstrate relevant work or life experience.
Credit for prior learning - general
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.

Credit for prior learning - specific
The Faculty may give credit towards a BSc for previous tertiary study and other approved forms of post-secondary study or experience. This previous study need not have led to a complete qualification; for example, a student may be given credit after completing the first year of a course at another institution. All applications for advanced standing must be made initially to the Selection/Enrolment Officer who will advise students of the necessary procedures.
All applications are considered on merit and usually no credit will be given for subjects/courses/units completed more than seven years prior to the request. For the BSc the maximum credit for prior learning that can be granted is 16 credit points. This may include up to 8 credits for non-science studies.
