Course overview
The Master of Applied Science has been designed to increase your breadth and depth of knowledge, and application of skills, in contemporary scientific processes, as well as in a specialisation chosen from the following areas:
- Occupational Hygiene
- Sustainable Water Management
- Environmental Management
The course will offer an integrated suite of units that will cover industrial/environment health, sustainability, environment and/or waste management, chemical hazards and water treatment and management.
Depending on your specialisation, the course aims to provide you with a critical understanding and ethical awareness of issues related to occupational hygiene and environmental and resource management, including an understanding of legislation and the administration of policy in your field.
You will learn the ability to integrate risk, environmental and resource management core concepts into practical applications in your chosen field, and implement appropriate methods of management to a range of situations involving occupational hygiene and natural resource use.
The course will also provide a pathway for students who wish to undertake a doctorate degree.
Professional recognition
The University is seeking accreditation from the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH).
Fees and charges
Fee paying place - International (IFP)
A Fee paying place is one for which the University does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fees for international students apply to persons living in Australia with Temporary Resident status, provided that there is no limitation on study and persons living abroad who are not Australian citizens and do not have Permanent Resident status in Australia.
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study.

Entry requirements - general
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record. The minimum requirements are successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from an approved university or other educational institution or successful completion of other equivalent qualifications gained by examination, or approved professional or industrial experience. International students must also meet the English language requirements.
Entry requirements - specific
Applicants will normally have successfully completed an approved bachelors level degree (or equivalent) in a related area, comprising at least three years of study; or undertaken the Graduate Certificate of Applied Science (or equivalent) and achieved a 60 weighted average mark.
Closing dates

Credit for prior learning - general
If you have completed previous studies which you believe may reduce the number of units you have to complete at Deakin, indicate that you wish to be considered for credit for prior learning in your application. You will need to provide a certified copy of your previous course details so your credit can be determined. If you are eligible, your offer letter will then contain information about your credit for prior learning.
Your credit for prior learning is formally approved prior to your enrolment at Deakin during the Enrolment and Orientation Program. You must bring original documents relating to your previous study so that this approval can occur.

Credit for prior learning - specific
Applications for credit for prior learning (CPL) are to be forwarded to the Coordinator of the Master of Applied Science and should entail a detailed description of the syllabus, tasks performed, transcripts and hours of work, or details of work experience including position descriptions and actual work tasks. Each application will be considered by the Coordinator, in consultation with the respective Unit Chair on its own merits. The maximum credit for prior learning permitted in any one case is 4 credit points out of a total 12 credit points for the Masters degree.
