Campus: Students are required to attend a 2 day a week intensive for 3 weeks.
This unit focuses on the theory, history and practice of virtual heritage. In it we will study how museums and heritage sites have engaged with the opportunities afforded by the ‘digital revolution’. We will look into the early history of this engagement to understand the debates that developed around the introduction of digital media in museums. We will look into current practices and seek to understand how they are changing our understanding both of heritage and the cultural institutions that are charged with identifying, preserving and displaying it. We will do so by exploring a range of applications, in different institutional contexts and in different countries though reading and by visiting different sites. Finally, we will seek to use our new knowledge and understanding to develop an imaginary brief that encapsulates best practice for one aspect of this new world heritage institutions find themselves in – the development of a multimedia interactive.
