Content
The unit enables students to explore the increasing emergence of new media technologies in the contemporary world. Students will examine issues such as the nature and impact of the internet and the ‘digital divide’; theoretical understandings of social media, digital participation and user-generated content; the implications of expanding digital entertainment industries; and the intensity and pervasiveness of the ‘Surveillance Society’. The 21st century communications environment is considered in relation to diverse social, geographical, cultural, industrial, political, legal and ethical contexts. Students will both explore and experience the intersections of digital creation and critical analysis, engaging with the potential benefits and threats of new media for personal and professional use.

Annotated bibliography, 15%
