Content

This unit invites students to analyse popular genres: horror, crime, autobiography, the Western, and romance. Story-telling is a fundamental means through which humans make sense of the world, and genres provide a common template for story-telling and meaning-making. This unit investigates what kinds of stories genres obsessively tell and what kinds of meanings they habitually generate. Examining texts from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, students will learn about the influential forces of historical and cultural contexts. They will also be introduced to relevant interdisciplinary fields such as gender studies and psychoanalysis. Students will engage with the subject matter by writing their own piece of genre fiction, as well as by undertaking a multimedia presentation and a critical essay exploring genre and its obsessions.
