This unit explores research-based and experience-based issues in transition from childcare or kindergarten to school. Reading, discussions, interviews with parents, interviews with teachers at various early childhood levels, and on-line presentations by specialists will be used to identify key elements for individual case studies. Training in ethical considerations and methods of data collection are also undertaken. Students will contribute to an annotated bibliography and present an oral case study proposal to a to peer-professional panel. They will then undertake and submit a literature review and a case study of a child making a transition between levels of early childhood education. An open book exam will focus on how early childhood teachers can cater for individual differences and cultures in the transition process.
