Content

Building on HPS977, this is both a theoretical and practical unit that provides the opportunity to evaluate various intervention techniques and to develop skills in different types of therapy. Topics include therapies to address common clinical problems in adulthood such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, substance abuse, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. In addition, the major therapies employed with children will be covered (psychotherapy, play therapy cognitive and behaviour therapy); as well as therapy interventions with people with intellectual disabilities and the elderly. The emphasis is on evidence-based practice. A major focus will be on the development of high level therapy skills through the use of role-play, video recording of simulated therapy sessions, feedback and discussions.

Assessment

Examination (2 hours) 50%, assignment (3000 words) 30%, evaluation of a role-play 20%
