This unit is a core unit in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Coaching and Counselling.

You will need to access substantial learning resources and experiences in CloudDeakin (Deakin’s online learning environment). Compliance with the Standards in computing, connectivity and student capability are a condition on your enrolment.


The unit aims to enable students to develop understanding of, and practice in, current approaches in coaching and counselling for behaviour change including:

  • Theoretical models;
  • Interpersonal skills and applications in challenging situations;
  • A range of practical, generic coaching and counselling skills applicable to a range of coaching and counselling environments;
  • An awareness of cross-disciplinary applications of the coaching/counselling process;
  • Experience in applying practical applications of the coaching and counselling process with an individual client-focus. (Students will coach a client for four private coaching sessions).
  • Developing an ethical framework for coaching/counselling practices;
  • Personal growth enhancement, Positive Psychology and well-being strategies.


Assignment 1: Critical analysis of coaching sessions with a client (4 x 1 hour sessions).
Part (a) - Critical analysis of sessions 1-2 (1500 words) 40%.
Part (b) - Critical analysis of sessions 3-4 (1500 words) 40%.
Assignment 2: Reflective practice diary. Minimum of five entries, equivalent to 1500 words, 20%


Hurdle Requirement: Satisfactory completion of the counselling and coaching skills development exercises in at least 8 of the 11 seminars.
