HSW101 - Introduction to Social Work: Social Work Theory and Practice A

Trimester 1: Waterfront (Geelong), Cloud (online)^, CBD*
Campus: 1 x 2 hour seminar per week. Campus students are expected to attend 9 out of the 11 seminars.
^Cloud (online): All online social work students must attend a compulsory 5 day campus-based Intensive at the commencement of this unit, at which core practical learning requirements will be taught. The Intensive will be held at at Waterfront (Geelong), during O week on Monday 27 February, Tuesday 28 February, Wednesday 1 March, Thursday 2 March and Friday 3 March 2017. All course materials and other learning activities are provided on the CloudDeakin site.
*CBD refers to Institute of Koorie Education – Community Based Delivery
This unit aims to introduce students to aspects of the history and current context of social work practice, and to begin to develop an appreciation of the role of social work and the human services generally. The unit is descriptive and informative in helping to unfold for students the diversity of the social work field and its history. It is also critical and interpretive. The unit also provides an introduction to the different disciplinary aspects of the social work program and how they fit together in the study of social work.
Assessment task 1: Reflective essay (1500 words) 40%
Assessment task 2: Organisational analysis and literature review (2500 words) 60%
Hurdle requirement - Cloud (online) students only
Attendance at a 5 day seminar held during trimester at Waterfront (Geelong) campus
