This unit provides an overview of theories about the social construction of the self. It will ground these theories in an analysis of human development across the life course in the context of the major social divisions in society. More specifically, the unit explores: agency-structure debates and the role of subjectivity in shaping the self; theories of human and family development across the lifespan, including the social construction of childhood; the self as both a relational and autonomous being; contributions from humanism, feminism, psychoanalysis and postmodern thinking to developing an understanding of the self; and the role of privilege and oppression in shaping the individual.
