Content
All organizations across all sectors of the economy employ managers, to develop and implement strategy and to ensure operations proceed as planned. The self-employed and sole proprietors of businesses also require management skills. This unit will provide students with an understanding of the theory and practice of management. It will facilitate critical analysis of contemporary management issues, and encourage students to develop their managerial skills and capabilities.
This unit covers the core elements of management and considers these within their broader socio-economic context. The practice of management is complex and often difficult, subject to diverse sources of influence, especially in challenging times. Through this unit students will gain an understanding of why there are no simple answers, and why a simple ‘checklist-approach’ to management cannot work. The unit’s approach focuses on
the relationships that managers need to develop, as well as the processes in which they need to be skilled.
Above all, this unit elaborates on the view that management is about working with people with varied incentives, interests and abilities to achieve desired objectives.
Assessment
Assessment 1 (individual) - Written assignment in which students will address a contemporary management problem or issue (2000 words) - 40%,
