Trimester 2 weekly seminar or off-campus study:

1 x 3 hour seminar per week

 

In Trimester 2, the unit is provided in a series of weekly seminars for on-campus students, as well as recorded lectures and e-live sessions for off-campus students.

 

Trimester 3 Burwood Intensive offering and/or off-campus study:

In Trimester 3 the unit is provided as a set of two workshops, each of two days, plus a half-day revision session.  There are no weekly classes.  Recorded lectures and e-live sessions are available for off-campus students, however off-campus students are also welcome to attend Intensive offering sessions.  The two day workshops are held in November (topics 1-5) and January (topics 6-11), and are likely to be Thursday-Friday.

Content

The unit content focuses on the strategic management of people in the workplace.  It is designed for managers or aspiring managers to be able to understand the potential of strategic HRM in the macro context to build a strategic competitive advantage for organisations.  It uses a mix of local and global examples to illustrate these points.  Specific attention is given to issues of strategic alignment and developing a HR strategy, talent management, human resources planning, talent development, and managing for performance.  Students will also develop practical skills in HRM topics that they will be able to utilise in their workplaces.

Assessment

Written Assignment (Individual 3000-3500 words or Group/up to 4 students 6000-6500 words) 50%, Examination 2 hours 50%, Hurdle requirement: achieve 50% of the marks available on the examination.
