Content
This unit covers the basic principles of magnetic circuits, single phase and three phase transformers, real and reactive power, and principle of rotating electric machines. Topics addressed in this unit include: switching behaviour of controlled rectifier, DC-AC inverter circuits, DC-DC boost and buck converters, PWM DC-DC converter drive, four quadrant converter for DC machines, rotating electromagnetic waves in AC machines, synchronous machines, variable voltage-frequency control for induction machine, current and variable frequency supply, equivalent circuit of machines, torque-speed characteristics and drive system design, dynamic and regenerative braking of machines.
Assessment
Project work 20%, laboratory work 20%, examination 60%. To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must achieve an overall mark of at least 40% in the examination and compulsory attendance is required by all students to unit-specific activities at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. These unit-specific activities may be undertaken either at scheduled sessions on multiple days during the trimester or during a single day of unit-specific activities scheduled during Week 9.
