1 x 1 hour lecture, 1 x 1 hour tutorial per week, 1 x 2 hour practical per trimester.  Compulsory on campus attendance requirement for all students either at scheduled sessions on multiple days during the trimester or on a single scheduled day during Week 9.   Typically on-campus (G) enrolled students will attend the compulsory activities for this unit at scheduled sessions on multiple days during the trimester and off-campus (X) enrolled students will attend the compulsory activities for this unit on a single scheduled day during Week 9.

Content

Topics to be addresses in this unit include: Introduction: general terminology, dimension and units. Steady conduction: Fourier law, overall heat transfer coefficient, thermal resistance (network). General conduction equation theoretical and numerical approaches to solve: two dimensional steady conduction problems. Unsteady conduction: lumped heat capacity method and numerical method up to two dimensions. Convection: principles of convection, empirical formula and natural convection heat exchanger: heat exchanger calculations. radiation: radiation properties; black body, view factors, radiation between black surfaces and radiation between grey surfaces.

Assessment

One assignment 40%, examination 60%. To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must achieve an overall mark of at least 40% in the examination and compulsory attendance is required by all students to unit-specific activities at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. These unit-specific activities may be undertaken either at scheduled sessions on multiple days during the trimester or during a single day of unit-specific activities scheduled during Week 9.
