Content

SIT772 covers two important foundational but related techniques for capturing, representing, storing, managing structured, unstructured or loosely structured data, and retrieving required information. Firstly, the unit will develop an understanding of data modelling and database technology. The relational data model, database design, implementation and information retrieval techniques will be studied in depth. Secondly the unit will develop the understanding of information retrieval from unstructured or loosely structured data. The techniques of text document indexing, representative models of text document retrieval, and methods of information retrieval evaluation will be studied in detail. The applications of database and information retrieval technologies to Web information search and data analysis will also be introduced.
