Content

The aim of the unit is to provide an overview of the status of fisheries stocks throughout the world, the varying management practises involved, the science underlying management activities and the difficulties in reconciling scientific best practice and “on-the-ground” reality.   Topics to be addressed include the history of the world’s fisheries both locally and globally, a review of a variety of different fishing methods and their impacts on target species, non-target species and the environmental; methods and effectiveness of management and enforcement of fishing regulations; and the impact of broader scale economics on the sustainability of fish resources on a broader scale.

Assessment

Case study (approximately 3000 words) 50%, five topic reports 25%, final exam 25%
