Content

SLE371 will provide students with the opportunity to study the principles of human and animal navigation.  The unit features a seven day field trip in Victoria during the intra-trimester break where there will be immersive teaching and the great majority of the teaching and learning will occur.  Students will explore the theory of human and animal navigation in classes, and then experience and test them via activities, observations and experiments on free living animals (e.g. humans, birds, and invertebrates) and cues used by animals and humans. During the field trip, students will also benefit from camaraderie of living and working with other researchers under field conditions with a view to developing enhanced interpersonal, intrapersonal, teamwork and communication skills. The fieldtrip also lends itself towards students developing knowledge and passion for studying animal behaviour and ecology that only comes from working in the field with wild animals.

Assessment

2 x scientific papers (15% each) 30%, group oral presentation 10%, examination 60%
