Design is that aspect of architecture, which ultimately brings the diverse influences on place into balance and resolution, and it is naturally the means for bringing the architectural concerns of structure, materials, economics, function, environment and aesthetics together. Design is the place of hierarchy and order - the place of ideas and meaning. It is the fact and possibilities of architectural design that makes architecture as philosophic as it is physical. These are the things we wish to open up to you in SRD163 – thus its sub-title – Drawn Thought.
We have developed a series of projects to allow you to engage in this kind of understanding and insight, and allow you to see yourself dealing in these matters. You will be introduced to a range of architectural design and production techniques, which through the nature of the projects and the submission requirements, will allow you to develop the means required to understand and undertake architectural design, and fulfil the listed graduate learning outcomes. These means will involve thinking, drawing, researching, critique, printing, and model making. You will be working directly with your own work, and the work of others. Through our discussions and your production we hope to provide you with the context to see your personal engagement, and endeavours as represented through architectural design.
Individual projects (35%, 55%) 90%, individual/group project 10%
