VCE Extension Studies program offers students studying VCE Health and Human Development and VCE Psychology the opportunity to take on a university unit and start their Deakin University experience sooner.
The two units in this extension study are designed to build on VCE Health and Human Development.
HBS110 Health Behaviour uses a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of lifestyle and behaviours on health and factors that impact on health behaviours across the life span. You will develop an understanding of the process, challenges and skills involved in health behaviour change. You can study this unit in on-campus tutorials (Melbourne Burwood Campus) or fully online at a time and place that suits you. This unit involves three hours contact per week: one two-hour lecture and one one-hour tutorial. Assessment in this unit involves a six-week health behaviour journal (45%), 10 online weekly quizzes (10%) and an end of trimester examination (45%).
HBS108 Health Information and Data will help you develop skills in identifying and evaluating different forms of health evidence. You will learn how to make critical judgements about the many health claims we see every day and the quality of health information available to the public. You will develop skills in distinguishing valid, well-researched health claims from those that have little or no evidence to support them. This unit is taught fully online so you can choose to study whenever and wherever you like. While there are no formal contact hours, you will join one-hour online tutorials and discussion groups for three hours per week. Assessment in this unit is five online quizzes (25%), a 1000-word paper about a contentious health issue (25%) and an end of trimester examination (50%).
How you will learn: Deakin delivers quality online learning where you can access resources, connect with staff and students, and join discussions and tutorials. You will have full access to the Deakin Library, both on campus and online. While you will be studying with other Deakin students, there will be special discussion groups for VCE students as well as weekend workshops at our Melbourne Burwood Campus.
How these units relate to future studies at Deakin: If you go on to study at Deakin you may claim credit for these units as part of a range of health courses including nursing, exercise and sport science, occupational therapy, social work, psychology, vision science and public health and health promotion, or as elective units in other courses.
