A range of pathways are available to students who do not meet the academic entry requirements for a Deakin course.

Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI)

Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI) prepares students for entry to degree-level study at Deakin University, and other tertiary institutions in Australia. DUELI also offers English language programs to students who wish to develop English skills for personal and professional development.

You will automatically be eligible for placement at DUELI if you meet Deakin University’s academic entrance criteria, but do not meet the English language requirements.

Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology (MIBT)

MIBT students

Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology Pty Ltd (MIBT)offers an excellent pathway to Deakin for students who do not meet the entry requirements for Deakin University's courses or who need to bridge the gap between previous study and university.

Located on Deakin University's Melbourne Burwood Campus, MIBT provides a direct pathway to Deakin University in the areas of business/commerce, computing/information technology and mass communication. Students who do not meet the entry requirements for Deakin University may be offered a place at Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology (MIBT).

MIBT diplomas are equivalent to the first year of the Deakin University undergraduate degree. On satisfactory completion of a MIBT diploma and subject to meeting University academic entrance criteria, MIBT graduates are guaranteed entry to second year at Deakin University.

MIBT advantages:

  • study on a University campus
  • fast-track option, with three semesters per year
  • intakes in March/June/October
  • small group teaching and individual attention
  • academic and welfare support services.

TAFE pathways

Deakin and its Technical and Further Education (TAFE) partners collaborate to offer pathways via Certificate IV, diploma, advanced diploma and associate degree qualifications. TAFE pathways may provide students with Credit for Prior Learning into specific Deakin degrees if admission requirements are met.

The TAFEs in closest proximity to Deakin's campuses are:

  • Box Hill Institute of TAFE (Melbourne Burwood Campus) 
  • The Gordon (Geelong Waterfront Campus)
  • South West Institute of TAFE (Warrnambool Campus). 

A range of pathway programs and credit arrangements exist with many other TAFE institutions in Australia.

Examples of Deakin-TAFE pathways include:

  • Associate Degree of Commerce (Box Hill Institute) to Deakin Bachelor of Commerce
  • Diploma of Information Technology (The Gordon) to a Deakin Bachelor of Information Technology
  • Certificate IV in Nursing (South West TAFE) to a Deakin Bachelor of Nursing.

Faculty international teaching partnership

The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment has established a teaching partnership with Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC).
Under this course licencing agreement, RIC will offer the first two years of the Deakin Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of IT and the first year of the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree programs in Colombo.
Students then transfer to Australia to complete their Deakin degree.
