PhD Scholarship in Patterns of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour

PhD Scholarship in the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition (C-PAN)

Closing date for applications is 30 June 2012

A PhD Scholarship in physical activity and sedentary behaviour is available in Deakin University’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN).  C-PAN is a multi-disciplinary research centre recognised internationally for its expertise in nutrition and physical activity.

The successful applicant will join the Behavioural Epidemiology (BE) Group within C-PAN. The research program of the BE Group focuses on understanding and influencing eating, physical activity and sedentary behaviours and the factors impacting upon them.

The scholarship is with Dr Nicola Ridgers, an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher.

PhD project overview

Increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentary behaviour is a public health priority, yet few interventions have successfully changed behaviours over time. Developing a better understanding of children’s patterns of physical activity and sedentary behaviour has the potential to inform the development and delivery of physical activity interventions and programs to school-age children. This PhD will utilise physical activity and sedentary time data collected through two longitudinal cohort studies conducted in children and adolescents, and from a study examining seasonal effects on children’s physical activity and sedentary behaviours.

Potential research areas include:

  • examining patterns of physical activity and sedentary bouts;
  • the periodicity (regularity) of physical activity; and
  • determining factors that are associated with these patterns.
