PhD Scholarship in the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation
Comparative Research on Cultural Diversity and Social Justice

Deakin University is looking for an outstanding scholar for a full time PhD scholarship to work with the UNESCO Chair in Comparative Research on Cultural Diversity and Social Justice in the area of migration and comparative intercultural research.
The successful applicant will be a full member of a multi-disciplinary team. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Professor Fethi Mansouri. Applicants with disciplinary backgrounds in humanities or the social sciences, in particular political science, cultural studies and sociology are encouraged to apply. The award is to commence in 2013.
Eligibility
- Applicants must meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements and must hold a Bachelor’s degree with Honours H1 or a Master’s degree with a substantial research component, or equivalent, in a related field (students completing current courses in 2013 will be considered)
- Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents
- Applicants should have prior research experience in cultural diversity, social justice, migration, intercultural relations, multiculturalism, and Diaspora studies. Furthermore, they should be familiar with contemporary social theories of difference, justice and citizenship
- Applicants must have strong skills and experience in qualitative research methods and/or in-depth interviewing. They should also have experience working with migrants and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD)
- Applicants must be familiar with both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis. The use of visual methodologies will be an added advantage. Familiarity with ENDNOTE and NVIVO would be an advantage.
Funding
The scholarship stipend rate is $28,728 per annum for 3 years.

1. A one page expression of interest outlining the disciplinary, theoretical , methodological and practical expertise and experience you will bring to the research project.
2. A CV containing the following information:
a) Personal details (name, address, email and phone contact)
b) Citizenship
c) Your tertiary (university) qualifications.
d) Current study (if applicable)
e) Evidence of your research ability and qualifications to undertake a PhD, including where applicable:
- Original research, such as a thesis, dissertation or research project (not coursework essays or assignments)
- Research methods subjects/units completed
- Any research experience you may have had in your employment. You should outline what actual research you have done and what new knowledge was produced
- Your research publications, such as in refereed journals, conferences papers, books with original research, research reports in industry
- Scholarships or awards received, including where and when you received the award
- Names, positions and telephone contacts for two referees who can comment on your research ability. If your application is successful, referees will be asked submit a written reference that is returned directly to the university.
3. A scanned copy of the following documents:
a) Proof of citizenship: For Australian or New Zealand citizens, a birth certificate, relevant pages of passport, or citizenship certificate. For Australian permanent residents, relevant pages of passport showing visa or letter from the Department of Immigration.
b) Academic record: Transcripts of all of your tertiary education studies. These should indicate the name of the qualification, the institution of enrolment, the years of study, the subjects/units undertaken, the grades achieved and explanatory notes concerning the grades.
NOTE: If you have previously been enrolled in a higher degree by research at another institution, or are applying to transfer your research degree from another institution you also need to provide proof of your commencement date and evidence of any intermissions or changes of candidature (eg. from full-time to part-time).
