PhD Scholarship in the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research

Understanding changes in eating and/or physical activity over the transition from secondary school to young adulthood

Closing date: 17 June 2013

The overall aim of this project is to examine changes in eating and/or physical activity in the transition from secondary school to young adulthood. Late adolescence marks a transitional period of significant life changes following secondary school and this transition may have a powerful influence on eating behaviours and patterns of physical activity. Understanding how these behaviours change and why is important for developing strategies to promote resilience against detrimental lifestyle changes over this time. The scholarship is linked with the Critical windows: understanding changes in eating and physical activity over the transition from secondary school to young adulthood project, funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC).

The Scholarship is available with Deakin University’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN). C-PAN is a multi-disciplinary research centre recognised internationally for its expertise in physical activity and nutrition. This Scholarship is based at Deakin University’s Melbourne Burwood Campus.

The Chief Investigators involved in the project are Associate Professor Anna Timperio, Dr Verity Cleland, Professor David Crawford and Dr Jim Dollman. The successful applicant will be supervised by a team of experienced researchers who are supportive, meet regularly with students and provide timely feedback, and who work collaboratively in a vibrant research culture. The principal supervisor will be Associate Professor Anna Timperio. Anna has supervised three doctoral students to completion, and is currently supervising three others.

Project aims:

  • To examine changes in eating habits or physical activity among Year 11 students over two years (encompassing the transition out of school);
  • To examine associations between life (situational) events and these changes; and
  • To identify personal, social and environmental factors that explain associations between life events and changes in eating or physical activity.

Applicants can choose one of two available topics:

1) Understanding changes in eating over the transition from secondary school to young adulthood;

2) Understanding changes in physical activity over the transition from secondary school to young adulthood.
