Critical analysis of food policy in Australia
Closing date: 10 April 2013
Into the future, the Australian food system is facing critical challenges associated with food security and sustainability, and obesity prevention. The food system will be shaped by a number of food policy developments including the National Food Plan, the National Nutrition Policy and the Dietary Guidelines for Australians. Yet, there are contested views regarding the aims and objectives of these policies and their likely impact on public health, social and environmental outcomes. The aim of this research project is to build theoretical understandings of how and why food policy is being made in Australia. The research project will critically analyse the processes, stakeholders, events and contexts that led to the development and implementation of national food policies. A particular focus will be on analysing how public health nutrition ‘problems’ and ‘solutions’ are being framed. It is intended that the research findings will help improve the use of knowledge in policy-making processes and ultimately help contribute to the development of effective food policies to promote food security and sustainability and obesity prevention. The project is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council. The principal PhD supervisor is Associate Professor Mark Lawrence.
