PhD Scholarship - Population Health Strategic Research Centre

Incorporating equity into cost-effectiveness analyses of public health interventions

Deakin University's Population Health Strategic Research Centre is seeking outstanding applicants for a PhD Scholarship.

Substantial social inequalities have been demonstrated in the prevalence of obesity in countries such as Australia, with obesity prevalence in the most disadvantaged quintile around double that of the most advantaged. It is also well understood that many public health interventions are more likely to improve health outcomes in the more educated and advantaged social groups than in the least educated and more disadvantaged groups. Whilst it is important to identify effective interventions, it is also important to be able to identify effective interventions least likely to widen social inequalities in health outcomes.

This PhD would explore methods of quantifying and communicating the effect of interventions on the social distribution of health outcomes. Potential approaches range from a universal quantification measure of equity incorporated into the cost-effectiveness output to quantification of the costs, benefits and cost-effectiveness separately for different social groups. The successful applicant will be supervised by Prof Rob Carter, Director Deakin Health Economics.
