Scholarships for the Master of Teaching (LOTE methods) and the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (LOTE methods)
The Centre for Teaching Asian Languages and Cultures in Deakin University's Faculty of Arts and Education offers HECS-HELP scholarships to competent or native speakers of Mandarin, Japanese, Indonesian and Korean languages to enable these students to gain a secondary school teaching qualification. The scholarships are supported by the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP) - a key Australian Government initiative to increase teacher supply and enhance the quality of Asian languages education.
Value
Scholarships cover student contributions in full or half over the duration of the course.
Number of scholarships
- six full HECS-HELP scholarships and six half HECS-HELP scholarships for students beginning their Masters of Teaching (LOTE) studies in one of the four target Asian languages (Mandarin, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean) at Deakin University in 2010;
- nine full HECS-HELP scholarships and nine half HECS-HELP scholarships for students enrolled in the Master of Teaching at Deakin University in 2010 but who wish to exit early with the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (LOTE) degree in one of the four target Asian languages (Mandarin, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean).
Duration
Normal duration of the Master of Teaching is four trimesters, and the Graduate Diploma of Teaching is three trimesters.
Eligibility
- an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa;
- a commencing student enrolled full time in on-campus units (Melbourne Campus at Burwood) in Masters of Teaching (LOTE methods) or enrolled in the Master of Teaching with an early exit for the Graduate Diploma of Teaching;
- successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree or equivalent in two discipline areas (one of them is a major or minor sequence in either Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or Korean language);
- meet entry requirements for the Master of Teaching;
- English competency equivalent to band seven of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
