Financial assistance

At Deakin, we have trained staff to help you navigate through the various types of financial support available to you while you study. Some of that support comes from the University and some from the government.

The government provides financial assistance through Centrelink for full-time students by way of schemes such as ABSTUDY, Austudy, Newstart and Youth Allowance.

You may also be entitled to other concessions and allowances such as:

  • Fares Allowance to help cover the cost of travelling between your permanent home and educational institution (not paid for daily travel)
  • Rent Assistance to help with your rental expenses
  • Mobility Allowance assists you if you have a disability, cannot use public transport permanently or for an extended period without substantial assistance
  • Health Care Card - a benefit for low income earners and foster parents (including grandparents who are the primary carers of a grandchild).

There are a number of financial support schemes for uni students available from the government and you can find out more about them by calling Centrelink on 13 2490 or by visiting their website www.centrelink.gov.au.

Students experiencing financial difficulties may be eligible for interest free loans. Find out more about interest free loans.

Deakin also offers a range of generous scholarships for students from recognised equity groups to support them in their studies at the University. Find out more about scholarships.
