Located 7km from the Geelong CBD and within Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus, the Geelong Technology Precinct provides a unique resource and facility for research aimed at industry co-operation and research application. The precinct has been developed over the last 8 years to provide 11,000 m2 research and commercial facility together with existing biotechnology and other research capabilities on-site.
The GTP is home to the Institute for Technology and Research Innovation (ITRI) which was founded in 2008. ITRI boasts some 110 research staff and 90 post graduates. The GTP facility provides the resources for ITRI to continue to develop its unique style of research combined with industry co-operation. The Institute consists of the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation (CMFI), Centre for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Sciences (BioDeakin) and the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research (CISR). The Metabolic Research Unit (MRU) is also located within the precinct.
Another stage in the ongoing development of the precinct will be completed by the end of 2009 and will include: co-location of commercial businesses, new biosciences and chemistry laboratories, a “Proof of Concept Building” that allows industry to access fully serviced and controlled environment laboratory areas to prove their innovations and concepts, new office areas to accommodate a further 60 post graduate students and 35 ITRI staff and executives.
