Education Abroad programs

Discover the world by embarking on a Deakin University Education Abroad program!  Studying abroad can be an enriching, often life-transforming, experience where learning extends to the world beyond the classroom walls.   Through the Deakin University Education Abroad program you can experience life in a new cultural environment and gain credit towards your Deakin degree at the same time.
The reasons to study overseas are as far-reaching as the advantages you will gain. Education Abroad programs are available to all students and give you the chance to travel while you study and add a unique experience to your social, personal and career development.

You can choose from a wide range of Education Abroad programs depending on your individual needs and goals. Deakin’s Education Abroad Office has exchange programs which provide you with the opportunity to experience life in Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Taiwan and the USA.

Eligibility
Depending on your area of study and the program you choose, there will be different eligibility requirements.

To be eligible to participate on a Student Exchange Program, students are expected to maintain a Credit average or better with no failures on their academic record. Students also need to have completed at least 8 credit points of their degree at Deakin University before studying abroad.

Undergraduate students, including international students, are encouraged to apply for Education Abroad programs which include student exchange, short term programs, study abroad and work placements. Applications from postgraduate students are considered on a case by case basis.

Costs
Financing your trip can vary depending on the type and length of program, the country you are going to, as well as how and where you choose to live. To cover the cost of the program, the Deakin Travel Grant of $1500 is available to students participating in a semester or two-semester exchange. You can also apply for an OS-HELP loan of $2500 or $5000 which is added to your HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP balance.

Students who are accepted into the Exchange Program do not have to pay any tuition fees as their host institution but simply continue to pay tuition fees and the general services fee to Deakin University. Students will, however, be responsible for meeting all other costs associated with their exchange, including their return airfares, accommodation, meals, travel, personal expenses, insurance and the $100 administration fee.

Most universities will place students in residences, sometimes in a single or shared room. Payment for this accommodation is made directly to the host institution.

In general, students should allow for AUD $1800 per month in Europe or North America. Japan may be a little more expensive, Thailand less. When applying for a Student Exchange Program, students will need to demonstrate how they plan to support themselves financially.

Application
Applicants will be selected by their faculty on the quality of their written application and their academic record. Application forms are available from the Education Abroad Office or the website.
