Education Abroad programs

Discover the world by embarking on a Deakin University Education Abroad program!  Studying abroad can be an enriching, often life-transforming, experience where learning extends to the world beyond the classroom walls.   Through the Deakin Univesity Education Abroad program you can experience life in a different country and gain credit towards your Deakin degree at the same time.
The reasons for studying overseas are as far-reaching as the advantages you will gain. Education Abroad programs are available to all students, including postgraduate and international students, and give you the chance to travel while you study, adding a unique experience to your social, personal and career development.

Studying overseas will help you to:

  • Prepare for the global employment market—gain a competitive edge through your international experience.
  • Develop personally—learn and grow, embrace a new culture and challenge your beliefs.
  • Gain academically—access a full and diverse set of subject choices.
  • Learn or improve another language—learn as much outside the classroom as within.
  • Travel and have fun—see the world, explore amazing places and make a worldwide network of friends from many different backgrounds.

You can choose from a range of Education Abroad programs depending on your individual needs and goals, including exchange programs, study abroad programs, summer and winter programs, short-term international study programs and international internships. Through an Education Abroad program you can experience life in over 30 different countries around the world.

Eligibility
Depending on your area of study and the program you choose, there will be different eligibility requirements.

To be eligible to participate in the student exchange program, students are generally expected to maintain a Credit average or better with no failures on their academic record. Students also need to have completed at least 8 credit points of their degree at Deakin University before undertaking an Education Abroad program.

Costs
Financing your trip can vary depending on the type and length of program, the country you are going to, as well as how and where you choose to live. To cover your costs you can apply for an OS-HELP loan of $2500 or $5000 per semester which is added to your HECS-HELP balance. You may also wish to consider undertaking an exchange at one of the universities for which Deakin has obtained UMAP (University Mobility in the Asia Pacific) funding from the Commonwealth Government. UMAP subsidies of $4400 are offered to up to 30 students every year.

Students participating in the Student Exchange program do not have to pay any tuition fees at their host institution but simply continue to pay tuition fees to Deakin University while students who participate in the Sutdy Abroad program will need to pay international student fees to their host university. Students are responsible for meeting all other costs associated with their exchange, including their return airfares, accommodation, meals, travel, personal expenses, insurance and the $110 Education Abroad program application fee.

In general, students should allow for AUD $6000-$8000 per semester for studies in North America or Europe. Some countries are more expensive, other less. When applying the Exchange or the Study Aborad program, students will need to demonstrate how they plan to support themselves financially while overseas.

Application
Applicants are selected by their faculty on the quality of their written application and their academic record. Application forms are available from the Education Abroad Office or the website.
