I am very pleased to welcome you to Deakin University.
Deakin aims to be recognised as Australia’s most progressive university.
To fulfil this aspiration, we work hard to make our academic programs,
our
research,
our partnerships and our international programs relevant, innovative and responsive.
This means that regardless of whether you study through our off-campus programs,
as more than two-thirds of Deakin’s postgraduate students do, or at one
of Deakin’s five campuses, we are committed to providing you with excellent
academic programs that include flexible learning options incorporating innovative
teaching and delivery methods. We recognise that many of our postgraduate students
are completing studies to acquire highly specialised skills and knowledge to
enhance employment prospects in today’s increasingly competitive work
environment. Through advice from representatives of relevant industry, professional
and government bodies, Deakin aims to ensure that its coursework programs remain
relevant and that they are responsive to the emerging needs of the major employers
of our graduates. Indeed, a number of Deakin’s programs are developed
in partnership with corporate and professional organisations.
As one of Deakin’s core commitments is to facilitating continuing education
and lifelong learning, I particularly welcome those of you who are returning
to study after a period of absence. I understand the challenges this may bring.
I stress, however, that the rewards that flow from mastering new subject material
and from engaging with colleague students and staff are truly satisfying; these
rewards more than justify the effort involved, including, for many of you,
juggling work and study commitments.
I encourage you to explore the many opportunities that are available as part
of a university education that will extend and enrich your study experience.
Above all, I hope that you enjoy your studies and your time at Deakin.
Professor Sally Walker
Vice-Chancellor
