The School of Exercise and Nutrition is involved in many areas of research, below is a list of our research Groups.

Applied Exercise Research Unit
AERU The rich diversity of the Applied Exercise Research Unit at Deakin encompasses researchers interested in sport task analysis and exercise prescription to coaching and coach education to human performance in challenging environments and situations. These researchers are experts in exercise prescription and perform significant work with elite sportspeople, disease populations and challenging environmental and occupational situations. Most of the work within this unit encompasses the research boundaries of being Fit for Purpose.

Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research
CPAN The Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN) brings together expertise from a wide variety of disciplines: nutrition science, exercise science, behavioural science, epidemiology, medicine, and food policy. It is interested in the biological, behavioural, social and environmental determinants of physical activity and nutrition, with a particular emphasis on the health impacts of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

Dietetics Research Unit
functional foods and health The program of dietetics research at Deakin is diverse and reflects the variety of professional expertise of the dietetics teaching and research staff. The research program covers the application of dietetics in clinical, community and food service settings as well as health education research. Members of this program have significant research expertise in: clinical and biomolecular nutrition; nutrition in the frail elderly; dietary approaches to hypertension; and educational research and practice.

Molecular Medicine and Nutrition Research Unit
Molecular medicine The research focus of the group is on a range of chronic diseases that collectively impair the quality of life for billions of people all over the world. Research spans basic gene discovery and analysis through to the development and testing of new therapeutics, including functional foods and alternative medicine. It is underpinned by powerful and relevant experimental platforms that encompass clinical samples, animal models (Israeli sand rat, zebrafish), human models (psychophysics) and specific cell culture systems.

Metabolic Research Unit
MRU Scientists at the Metabolic Research Unit (MRU) target the genetic causes of three major diseases; obesity, diabetes and depression/anxiety. These are diseases which impair the quality of life of hundreds of millions of people all over the world.

WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention
WHO The World Health Organisation awarded Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences at Deakin University official Collaborating Centre status in 2003. The WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention and Related Research and Training is building evidence base and training programs needed to prevent obesity, especially in children and adolescents, in developed and developing countries.
