Molecular Medicine and Nutrition Research Unit
The Molecular Medicine and Nutrition cluster aims to:
- Understand the molecular basis of common disease states and how nutrients influence disease states.
- Apply this information to the development of therapeutics and functional foods.
- Focus on chronic diseases that collectively impair the quality of life for billions of people including diabetes, obesity, advanced cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Continue to gain strong support from National Granting Agencies, the pharmaceutical industry (including Verva Pharmaceuticals) and the food Industry (Dairy and Meat Industries).
- Facilities include the Metabolic Research Unit (Geelong), Molecular Nutrition laboratories (Burwood) and Molecular Medicine laboratories (Medical School, Geelong).
Strategic Focus & Research Objectives:
- Building interdisciplinary research, national and international collaborations.
- Improving research infrastructure and increasing the level of research activity.
- Research quality and outcomes as well as establishing linkages with Industry partners.
- High quality research training (PhD) and career development (i.e. three Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Fellows).
