The Faculty of Health is excited to announce a brand new course that will be offered from 2015 – the Master of Child Play Therapy.
Child Play Therapy is a growing specialist area within the mental health and early childhood sectors. It is an evidence-based profession in which play is used as the medium to transform children’s lives when they have experienced abuse or trauma, have a developmental disorder, or are experiencing a mental health issue.
Deakin is the only university in Australia offering training in Child Play Therapy. This two-year master degree provides specialist training for health, welfare, and education professionals who work in community-based services with children and families who have experienced developmental, emotional, trauma or events that result in or comprise a mental health issue or concern.
Practitioners from the early childhood education field, and people currently working with children and families who have trained in the health and welfare professions such as occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, psychologists, paediatric and mental health nurses, creative arts therapists (e.g. music therapists and art therapists) will find this degree of interest. Basic prerequisites include experience working with children and families, and a relevant undergraduate degree.
Graduates will be eligible to become a Registered Play Therapist with the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association (APPTA).
Following the closing date for applications, short-listed applicants will be invited for interview. Only candidates deemed suitable at interview will be offered a place.
