Role and profile
Professor Jo Salmon holds a Personal Chair in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. She is Associate Head of School – Research and a member of the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (C-PAN). Professor Salmon currently holds a 5-year National Heart Foundation of Australia Career Development Fellowship Award (to finish July, 2012). She supervises 7 research degree students. Professor Salmon is an active researcher in understanding and influencing physical activity in populations, in particular children and families.

Professor Salmon's program of research focuses on the behavioural epidemiology of children’s' and adults’ physical activity and sedentary behaviour. She is interested in the assessment of these behaviours; in understanding the individual, social and environmental factors that influence participation; and the development of strategies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary time among children and adults. Recent research includes the development and validation of instruments to assess physical activity and sedentary behaviour among children; descriptive studies of influences on child and youth physical activity and sedentary behaviour; and examination of the effectiveness of strategies to reduce children’s sitting time and promote physical activity at school and at home. She has played a key role on the steering committee for development of the National Child and Youth Physical Activity Recommendations for 0-5 and for 5-18 year olds. Professor Salmon is Chair of the National Physical Activity Program Committee for the National Heart Foundation of Australia (NHFA). She regularly reviews research applications for national and international funding bodies, including NHMRC, ARC, NHFA, and the Marsden Fund New Zealand, and she is Vice-Chair of the Council on Obesity Prevention and Management, International Society for Physical Activity and Health.
