Role and profile
Dr Murfitt teaches in the disability stream of the Bachelor of Health Sciences. His
main area of research is employment and disability. His PhD looked into attitude
change in employment of people who have a disability. Kevin also coordinates the
Willing and Able Mentoring (WAM) Program. This program matches tertiary
students who have a disability with mentors in organizations relevant to the
students’ area of career interest.




Teaching responsibilities
Unit Chair HDS210, Diversity At Work, and assists with Field Work A and B, and
HDS106/726, Diversity, Disability, and Social Exclusion.




Research interests
Dr Murfitt’s main area of research is concerned with understanding and
identifying solutions to the barriers faced by people who have a disability in
gaining employment. Areas of particular interest are:
Attitude change in employment of people who have a disability;
The impact of experiential interventions such as mentoring in fostering better
inclusion of people who have a disability in the workforce;
And the role people who have a disability themselves have in reducing those
barriers to employment for people who have a disability.



Awards and prizes
1990, Deakin University Alumni Award for outstanding academic achievement;
2002, Australian Human Rights Award for his contribution to the development of
accessible public transport standard under the Disability Discrimination Act
(1992)

Service to the University, discipline or community
Dr Murfitt has contributed to various university committees including the Deakin
University Equal Opportunity Committee, the Disability Resource Centre Advisory
Committee, Institute of Disability Studies Academic Progress Committee, and
various staff interview committees. Kevin is currently Chair of Vision Australia,
and a Director of the Disability Services Board of Victoria.
