Role and profile
Sharlene Nipperess is a lecturer in the School of Health and Social Development. Sharlene has worked as a social work practitioner and educator in Queensland, Western Australia and, most recently, Victoria. Her practice, teaching and research interests include human rights and critical social work, social work ethics and the fields of practice of social work with refugees and asylum seekers and people who experience mental health issues. She is also interested in rural, regional and remote social work and the relationship between environmental issues and social work. Sharlene is a member of the National Ethics Committee of the Australian Association of Social Workers and the National Practice Standards Committee, which is overseeing the current review of the national Practice Standards (2003). Sharlene is currently completing her PhD on human rights and social work practice and education.
Teaching Responsibilities
Sharlene is currently Unit Chair in HSW101 Introduction to social work: social work theory and practice A and HSW701 Australian social work in an international context.
Research Interests
Sharlene is currently conducting research in the following areas:
• Human rights and social work practice
• Social work ethics, in particular social work codes of ethics
• Social work with refugees and asylum seekers
• Social work education in relation to the above three areas
