12th September 2013
Dear All,
Next week the Faculty of Health will be providing free pizza lunches on each campus to for students enrolled in our courses across all year levels. We are seeking your assistance with the promotion of these events through your social media and group members. The purpose of the BBQ is to:
1. Provide a way to celebrate and mark the end of Trimester 2.
2. Give students access to a number of different support services.. We will have the following staff available at each lunch:
a. Course Advisors to provide last minute assistance with re-enrolments if students have questions or need help.
b. Staff from the Division of Student Life will be available along with resources to assist students seeking assistance with preparation for exams (tips and advice).
c. The JobShop will have representatives there to provide students with access to resources to assist with resume writing, interviews skills etc
d. Alumni will be in attendance for any students who are considering becoming a member of Deakin Alumni
e. HSAS will be in attendance providing information about the 2014 Peer Mentor Program and seeking to get applications for 2014 Peer Mentors
3. Access to delicious pizza for free!
As this is the first time we are offering such an event we would love to see as many students in attendance as possible. To achieve this, we will need your help. Finally we have hoodies organised! Apologies for the delay, we have had a few supplier problems.
We are looking at $50 per hoodie regardless of DUSA/DOSS membership.
This year they are the same design as last year except they are Grey Marle with navy writing and regular colored logos.
We're planning to collect your orders and money next Tuesday 11th for Second years and Thursday 13th 3.30pm - 4.30pm for first years. They should be available early trimester 2.
The sizing, mock up image and order form will be emailed within a few days so please stay tuned for more info regarding them!

Hey everyone,
Hope trimester 1 is going well!
A few things to report back on...
Thanks to everyone who came to the Amazing Race, we had such a great turnout and thanks to those who completed the surveys on it! We hope to keep that a regular event in our event timetable and your suggestions will ensure it improves every year!
We also want to remind you that should you have any general suggestion for the committee feel free to email us anytime about anything! We love to hear back from you guys what you're looking to do!
This week is our Anzac Day Eve party at Chinese Whispers with the Travel Society! You can buy tickets for $10 at DUSA to this great event featuring TIMMY TRUMPET, JAMES FAVA and LESWARE! Please RSVP at the fb event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/171554536335860/?fref=ts and like the Travel Society if you haven't already on FB here: https://www.facebook.com/DeakinUniversityTravelSociety
It looks like it'll be a great night so don't hesitate to come along!!
Also I'd like to congratulate Samraj and Valerie for becoming our first year advisors for DOSS! Should you need assistance and you're in first year feel free to go to them if you have any questions or queries!
The committee would also like to clear up that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be later this year(Aug/Sept) and although voted last year at the AGM the President elected must be a "second year" this is quite an ambiguous statement as we do not finish in October like our fellow students in other courses, hence we would like to let everyone know that anyone going into second year next year or currently in second year is welcome to begin thinking about if they'd like to run for the incoming President 2014. Should you have any questions regarding this feel free to contact me.
Another important note is that a student in second year is offering tutoring for 1st or 2nd year Optometry students. Please visit our website: for more information or reply to this email.
We are also starting up a casual catch up group for Mature Age Optometry Students, if you are interested in this please reply to this email. It is a good opportunity for the mature age students to get to know each other!
Finally, I'd like to also apologise for the mishap regarding ordering Jumpers. Unfortunately the company we were planning to use have found that their trial kits for sizing are faulty. We're investigating other options so stay tuned! We are desperate to get them out to you ASAP too!!!
Kind Regards,
Laura Carson
DOSS President on behalf of the DOSS Committee

Come back here for new info and news on upcoming events and promotions. In recent news we held an End of Trimester 2 Fundraiser for World Sight Day. This event was called "Spectacular Spectacles" and members were encouraged to wear fancy or funny spectacles to raise money for World Sight Day. We also had a "Guess the amount of lollies in the jar" competition. Together we raised $410.05 for Optometry Giving Sight to help prevent the 75% of the world's unnecessary vision loss or blindness.
