Role and profile
Dr Lewandowski is the Geelong director of the Molecular Nutrition Unit within Deakin University's Strategic Research Centre in Molecular and Medical Research and the Deakin Medical School. Dr Lewandowski has a deep commitment to the use of nutrition and state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques to treat and prevent disease. Having enjoyed growing up in Victoria’s Western District and now living on a farm on the Bellarine Peninsular, Dr Lewandowski looks forward to producing research outcomes and educating medical graduates that will improve the health of people living in rural and regional locations in Australia and overseas.


Teaching responsibilities
Dr Lewandowski serves as coordinator of anatomy in the Deakin Medical School, with overall responsibility for the teaching anatomy across the medical course. Dr Lewandowski also supervises honours and PhD students.



Research interests
Dr Lewandowski has a growing research program aimed at understanding how nutrition can be used to treat or prevent the development of age associated diseases including cancer cachexia, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Much of this work has involved combining cutting-edge molecular biology and laboratory techniques with dietary modification to treat disease, with a focus on at-risk rural and migrant populations.



Awards and prizes
Dr Lewandowski was awarded the professional tile of Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) in 2010 and has received funding from both National Competitive Grant Schemes and Industry. He has also received a highly competitive Australian Nutrition Trust Fund travelling fellowship.

Service to the University, discipline or community
Dr Lewandowski has a strong commitment to improving the health of rural populations and has a strong presence in the local community, with a particular interest in research training. He has served as an invited member of the Australian Academy of Science, Theo Murphy Think Tank on Preventative Health and Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Research Workforce Strategy roundtable. Dr Lewandowski currently serves as Chair of Deakin University’s Faculty of Health OH&S Committee, is a scientific advisor for the National Centre for Farmer Health and is an active member of the Nutrition Society of
