Role and profile
Professor Andrew Sinclair is Professor of Nutrition Science in the School of Medicine, based in the Metabolic Research Unit, Waurn Ponds campus, at Deakin University. Professor Sinclair teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and also supervises higher degree students. He has twice been awarded the postgraduate supervisor of the year (Deakin University and RMIT University). Professor Sinclair has a PhD from the University of Melbourne. Professor Sinclair spent 10 years in the Victorian Department of Agriculture, being a senior research scientist at the Veterinary Research Institute in Parkville from 1975 until 1985. Following that, he joined RMIT University and from 1995 held the position of Chair in Food Science until 2005. In 2006, Professor Sinclair accepted a Chair at Deakin University. He was elected Fellow of Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology in 2001 and a Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Australia in 2003. Professor Sinclair is an Editor of the British Journal of Nutrition and on the Editorial Board of the Elsevier journal, Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids. He also serves on the AOCS Press Books and Publications committee and in 1999 was awarded the prestigious Supelco/Nicholas Pellick AOCS Research Award. Professor Sinclair is the Chair of the Australian Academy of Science, Nutrition Committee. Professor Sinclair has been the co-convenor of two major international conferences: the 3rd International Conference on Essential Fatty Acids and Eicosanoids, held in Adelaide in 1992, and the 2006 conference of the International Society for Fatty Acids and Lipids, held in Cairns. Professor Sinclair is an active researcher in a range of areas related to fatty acid metabolism in man and animals and the composition of foods (lipids and fat soluble vitamins). His latest research interests are in the role of essential nutrients in brain function (zinc, DHA), metabolism of DPAn-3, lipidomic analysis of chylomicrons and omega 3 fatty acid metabolism in fish and mammals.

Teaching Responsibilities
Currently teaches HSN301 Diet and Disease at the Warrnambool Campus

Research Interests
Professor Sinclair’s research is concerned with a range of issues related to nutrition, specifically:
Food Science (composition of food, especially lipid and fat soluble vitamins),
• Nutrition (fatty acid metabolism in man and animals),
• Functional foods (omega 3 PUFA, lycopene, olive oil, polyphenols, gamma-tocopherol, New Zealand Green Lip Mussell),
• Human Health (effect of omega 3 fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids, meat-and fish-containing diets and vegetarian diets on cardiovascular health including platelet function),
• Neuroscience (the role of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in brain, retina, and blood pressure regulation in mammals).
