Role and profile
Professor Alister Ward is Acting Head of School of Deakin University's School of Medicine, and Co-Director of Deakin's Strategic Research Centre in Molecular and Medical Research. He formerly also held the role of Associate Head of School (Research) within the Deakin Medical School, and has a deep commitment to developing a distinctive leading-edge research profile for the School. Having grown up in regional Victoria, Professor Ward brings a heartfelt enthusiasm for the rural and regional focus of the Deakin Medical School. He is confident that the School can deliver world-class teaching and research programs, producing graduates with a broad and integrated medical knowledge and research outputs that make a difference.


Teaching Responsibilities
Professor Ward serves as Director of Pre-Clinical Studies in the Deakin Medical School, with overall responsibility for years 1 and 2 of the medical course, and is Coordinator for its Knowledge of Health and Illness Theme. Professor Ward also supervises honours and PhD students.


Research Interests
Professor Ward has made a significant contribution to research aimed at understanding the pathways controlling development at both the cellular, organismal and clinical level and how perturbation of these pathways contributes to disease. Much of this work has involved cutting-edge studies elucidating the function of cytokine receptors and components of the Jak-Stat pathway, and particularly the nexus between these. The substantial research contribution made by Professor Ward is evidenced by his publication history. He has authored over 90 publications, with more than half as either first or last author. These publications have consistently been in high impact journals and widely cited.
