Dr Sharon Bentley (Haymes) obtained her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Optometry at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her PhD work involved the development of an instrument to measure the ability of persons with low vision to perform activities of daily living, for which she received the Brazelton Award from the American Academy of Optometry. Dr Bentley has experience as an Optometrist clinician, educator and researcher in Australia, Canada and the U.S. She was the recipient of international postdoctoral awards that supported her research on the effect of glaucoma on falls and driving performance. Her current interests include the impact of vision impairment on functional performance and quality of life, the development of patient reported outcomes for use in clinical trials of new eye treatments (in particular, the bionic eye), the delivery and evaluation of low vision services, public health optometry and the systematic review of new vision care interventions.
