Role and profile
Dr Hutchinson is Associate Professor of Nursing at Deakin University School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Cabrini-Deakin Centre for Nursing Research at Cabrini Health. Prior to this appointment she trained as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Knowledge Utilization Studies Program (KUSP) at the University of Alberta, Canada (2007-2009); supported by a national fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and a provincial fellowship from Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (formerly Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR)). Dr Hutchinson has been successful in obtaining competitive funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) – now Alberta Innovates Health Solutions - and has published extensively in high quality peer reviewed journals.
Teaching responsibilities
Dr Hutchinson supervises Honours, Masters and PhD students who are working in the field of decision making and/or knowledge translation/research utilisation to promote safety and quality in healthcare. She also teaches in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Research interests
Dr Hutchinson’s research interests centre on knowledge translation (research utilisation) in the healthcare setting and she has a particular interest in the influence of organisational context and interdisciplinary interaction on the uptake of research evidence by health professionals. Dr Hutchinson has experience in the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including the use of naturalistic observation, in-depth and focus group interviews, and surveys.

Dr Hutchinson has been a member of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia since 1990 and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International (an International Honour Society of Nurses) since 2006.
Service to the University, discipline or community
Dr Hutchinson has been a member of the Deakin University, Faculty of Health, Human Ethics Research Advisory Group since 2010.She has been a member of the editorial board for Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, published by Wiley-Blackwell/Sigma Theta Tau since 2009, and as a section editor for this journal she authors a regular education column. Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing is ERA rank A and was the top-ranked nursing journal in 2010. Dr Hutchinson is regularly invited to review for a range of international journals including Implementation Science, BMC Health Services Research, Qualitative Health Research, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership, Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing and the Journal of Clinical Nursing.
