Role and profile
Julie is a Professor of Nursing at Deakin University and Chair in Nursing at Eastern Health where she leads the Eastern Health - Deakin University Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre. Julie is an internationally respected clinician, educator and researcher whose expertise spans both industry and academic sectors. Through a commitment to a research-teaching-practice nexus, she improves the quality and safety of health care by optimising clinical decision-making, increasing the use of research evidence in practice, and ensuring effective models of service delivery. Julie’s clinical background is emergency nursing and she has held clinical, education, and research roles in emergency nursing over the last 2 decades. She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing, Founding Fellow of the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia and is Deputy Editor of the Australasian Emergency Nursing Journal. Julie represents the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia on the Australian Resuscitation Council, as Basic Life Support Convenor she also holds a position on their National Executive, and she represents the Australian and New Zealand Resuscitation Councils on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Basic Life Support Taskforce.



Teaching responsibilities
Julie is an expert educator and holds a 2012 Australian Government Office for Teaching and Learning Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, 2011 Deakin University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and 2011 Deakin University Award for Teaching Excellence. She is an expert in the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing education programs aimed at increasing workforce capacity and research use in clinical practice. Julie teaches in the Master of Nursing Practice courses in Emergency Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, and Nurse Practitioner specialities and also supervises a number of BN(Hons), Masters and PhD students.


Research interests
Julie’s research is aimed at improving the quality and safety of patient care by optimising clinical decision-making, use of research evidence in practice, and ensuring effective models of service delivery. She leads two programs of research. The first program is focused on Clinical Risk Management with a particular emphasis on the relationships between educational preparation, personal characteristics and decision context on clinical practice behaviours and the accuracy of clinical decisions. The second program is focused on Workforce Development and Service Delivery Models, in particular advanced nursing practice and nurse practitioner roles, transition to speciality practice, and emergency department service delivery models such as fast track and rapid assessment roles. Julie is also a foundation member of Deakin University’s Quality and Patient Safety Strategic Research Centre

She is the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia representative and Basic Life Support Convenor for the Australian Resuscitation Council and a member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Basic Life Support Taskforce.
