Dr Livingston is a Senior Research Fellow with over 20 years experience in public health research, including 14 years in cancer control. Her major research focus is to improve health service delivery to cancer patients; the aim to build effective relationships between health professionals and patients, to promote physical and psychological well being. This has involved research to determine the best delivery of health services to consumers through the development of screening programs, improving patient care during and after treatment and provision of policy initiatives to improve health outcomes for people with cancer. Dr Livingston has published widely in these areas.
Dr Livingston's research is focused primarily on improving the psychological and physiological health outcomes among people affected with cancer. She is particularly interested in investigating groups at high risk of anxiety and depression and how exercise may ameliorate the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment. Dr Livingston is also interested in the central role oncology nurses play in improving information and support to cancer patients. She has conducted several intervention studies in which she investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of strategies provided by oncology nurses to promote a systematic approach to information and support while cancer patients are undergoing treatment.
