ReVISE – Medical Simulation Unit

The Regional Victorian Institute of Simulation Education (ReVISE) provides a safe learning environment to deliver simulation-based training that contributes to patient care and safety. Our team develops new simulation programs to meet the needs of our users, and runs existing national and international programs such as E-MET and BASIC.

Our goal is to develop and deliver training that optimises health education and patient safety at all levels of expertise. In keeping with Deakin’s vision, we aim to provide innovative teaching that promotes community, rural and regional engagement.

Healthcare simulation allows clinicians and students from various disciplines to:

• practise procedures
• refine communication techniques
• gain experience in recognising and treating medical conditions
• undertake multidisciplinary teamwork training
• all training is in a safer environment without the potential to cause any patient harm.

ReVISE currently provides programs targeted at all levels of training in the areas of:

Advanced Life Support Level 2 (ALS2)

This Australian Resuscitation Council  internationally accredited two day course has been developed to standardise the teaching of cardiac arrest and resuscitation management. The ALS2 course consists of lectures, practical workshops and cardiac arrest scenarios, providing the opportunity to practice skills and apply knowledge. The course will emphasise the importance of teamwork prior to safe transfer into a critical care environment.

Introduction to Simulation Facilitation, Debriefing Skills and Simulation Familiarisation

Paediatric SimCom

Paediatric SimCom is an innovative program for advanced learners that combines communication training around paediatric goals of care for children with life-limiting conditions with resuscitation training and responding to a dynamic clinical and family environments. It has been run both in Geelong and at external sites including interstate.

Deteriorating Patient Program

Year 3 and 4 medical students at the Geelong Clinical School are exposed to a series of structured tutorials and simulated activities targeted at the identification and management of deteriorating patients.

Pre-internship Simulation Program

This innovative program combines volunteer simulated patients and experienced clinical tutors in order to create a hospital-like simulation experience for final year medical students.

UHG Supersessions

ReVISE believes that teams working together should train together. This ethos has driven the development of a unique model of large scale simulation education which allows 35-40 anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine trainees to engage in team based learning. Nursing staff from these areas are also encouraged to attend.

Specialised BLS/ALS

BLS/ALS refresher courses continue to be in high demand. ReVISE promotes developing programs that are specific to the stakeholders' area of interest. For example, a radiology BLS/ALS simulation program was designed, developed and conducted allowing for the diagnosis and treatment of common radiological emergencies, along with a refresher on BLS/ALS.

ReVISE specialises in design, implementation and facilitation of bespoke interprofessional and interdepartmental simulation programs. ReVISE has successfully designed and implemented insitu simulation programs that are inter-professional and have a quality and safety/systems-based focus.

We have worked with departments including paediatrics, neonates, ICU, ED and theatre. We have also designed training days and regular updates for learners that range from internship to consultant-level learners. ReVISE, along with the Geelong Clinical School Research Group, brings together researchers across health education fields to collaborate and investigate better ways to train the health professionals of the future. We conduct research across the spectrum of health professional education, from undergraduate to continuing professional development of fully qualified and experienced practitioners.

Director of Simulation – Kate McCloskey

Kate is a general paediatrician and medical director of simulation at Geelong clinical school. She completed her PhD with the Barwon Infant Study. Kate is particularly interested in child and adolescent research, the translation of simulation into clinical practice and combining high-fidelity simulated resuscitation with communication skills teaching.

Deputy Director of Simulation – Dr Melissa White

MBBS FACEM GCHPE

Melissa is an Emergency Physician with an interest in medical education and paediatrics. She completed a Fellowship in Simulation and Crisis Resource Management at Monash Simulation and Skills Centre before going on to complete further training in Simulation from The Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation. Melissa is an Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) course director and instructor, as well as an instructor for the Generic Instructor Course. She is currently the Co-Convenor for the Emergency rotation at the Geelong Clinical School. Her areas of interest in simulation include inter-professional learning and crisis resource management.

Simulation Developer and Clinical – Stephen Giggins

Stephen is a registered nurse with many years’ experiences in emergency and paediatrics. He joined the ReVISE team as a Simulation Coordinator and clinical skills educator and has been involved in the development and delivery of numerous high-quality programs. Stephen has undertaken additional training in simulation facilitation and debriefing and has worked collaboratively to develop new training models utilising 3D printing to further skills training capabilities. Stephen has a strong passion for the unlimited educational potential of simulation and its endless applications. Stephen’s future aspirations are to pursue further studies in simulation education and research and attain certification as an ARC ALS instructor.
