Helen is a lecturer in the occupational science and therapy program at the Geelong Waterfront Campus. Prior to commencing this role in 2005, Helen worked for over 30 years in a range of occupational therapy clinical, management and consultancy positions with a particular interest in the area of disability and related research.

At Deakin, Helen teaches primarily into level three of the occupational therapy program and also has teaching responsibilities at other year levels and other units within the Faculty of Health. Helen also teaches into level one and two units within the School of Architecture, where the focus is on built environments and their role in promoting communities that are welcoming and inclusive of people with diverse abilities.

Helen’s research and teaching interests include:

• Curriculum renewal with a particular focus on constructive alignment
• Supporting students to become reflective in their approach to practice
• The scholarship of teaching and learning
• Inter-professional education and collaboration
• Preparing students for new and emerging areas of practice

Helen’s contribution to teaching and learning has been recognised through the receipt of several awards including:

• 2011 ALTC Citation for outstanding contribution to student learning
• 2011 Deakin Faculty of Health Award for Innovation
• Deakin Vice Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence (2010)
• Deakin Vice Chancellors Award for Distinguished Teaching (2010)
• School of Health and Social Development Award for Teaching Excellence (2010)
• Joint winner of HERDSA 2010 (Melbourne) conference University of Sydney, Institute of Teaching and Learning Creative Presentation Award.
