HERG colloquia 2011

The HERG Colloquia Series is designed to provide HERG members with practical advice on research and publishing. Facilitated by expert higher education researchers from within and outside Deakin, sessions cover topics such as: obtaining ethics clearance for higher education research, maximising publishing opportunities, choosing the right journal and building a publication profile.

The HERG Colloquia Series was first introduced in 2009 after several conversations among HERG members highlighted the need to talk about research into higher education in a robust, yet informal way. The Series was designed to engage staff in national and international issues related to higher education research and teaching and learning scholarship as well as to assist less experienced colleagues to develop skills and expertise necessary to conduct research in this field.

HERG colloquium #1: How to write a journal article in 2 days

This seminar aimed to introduce starting researchers to established but not well-known processes of writing a journal article. It was based on Dr Perry's three publications about the topic. It was a synthesis of writers such as Brown (1996), Day (1996), Huff (1999) and other literature. The seminar had four parts covering more than two days of activity:
·        Targeting an article’s readers - conferences etc
·        Getting read and cited - title, abstract, introduction and conclusion
·        Writing - structure, style
·        Redrafting, sending off and revising

The seminar showed that article writing is a collaborative craft and is not an art or ‘an abstract exercise aimed at inanimate objects’.

Dr Perry was  Professor of Marketing & Management with the Graduate Management College at Southern Cross University, Gold Coast, QLD. He has written or co-written 3 textbooks, 16 book chapters and more than 110 refereed journal articles and conference papers.  Since retiring he has been giving seminars throughout the Asia-Pacific region, on a variety of topics.

HERG colloquium #2: Teaching: Old lessons and new realities

Many of the fundamentals of good teaching haven't changed for many years. The fact that many of us remember fondly wonderful teachers when we were students suggests as much. Yet teachers in higher education are now presented with new challenges. The era of mass education creates a different kind of university student. Students often have heavier work responsibilities and spend less time on campus. Moreover, they have grown up in an era of much greater web experience and with an audiovisual culture much greater than that of previous decades. This talk discussed these problems and makes some personal reflections on how one teacher has attempted to deal with them.

Dr John Minns is an Associate Professor in Political Science and International Relations at the Australian National University. He is also the Director of the Australian National Centre of Latin American Studies. In his time at the ANU since 2003, he has won four teaching Awards, mostly recently the Prime Minister's Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year.
