Healthy Cities and Communities Short Course
Guest speakers

Deakin University is delighted to be conducting the Healthy Cities and Communities Short Course for its third consecutive year. Speakers will include:

Dr Iain Butterworth: Course Convenor and Senior Lecturer, Deakin University

A community psychologist, Iain Butterworth co-produced 'Environments for Health', the Victorian State Government’s municipal public health planning policy framework, which draws strongly on Healthy Cities.principles. In 2003-2004 Iain was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, investigating Healthy Cities evaluation. His mentor was Healthy Cities co-founder, Prof Leonard Duhl.
Since joining Deakin University in 2004, Iain has:

  • Run short courses in 2005 and 2006, with Healthy Cities founders, Prof Leonard Duhl and Dr Trevor Hancock
  • Researched the ‘health’ dimensions of Melbourne 2030, the Victorian State Government’s urban planning blueprint for Melbourne;
  • Helped establish Deakin University’s new interdisciplinary postgraduate planning degree, to which the Short Course contributes;
  • Investigated the development and implementation of ‘walkability’ indicators with local governments
  • Investigated the role of property developers in building healthy cities and communities
  • Investigated the experiences of participants from the 2006 Healthy Cities and Communities Short Course since they returned to their workplace. The 2007 Short Course builds on this research.

Anthony Aris: Psychologist and organisational development consultant

Anthony Aris has 15 years’ experience in adult education and organisational development. Over this time he has worked in various settings in Western Australia and Victoria, including counselling, school psychology, universities, training and development and the management of allied health service delivery. During the 1990s, Anthony held an active interest in health promotion in secondary schools, including community-wide initiatives on youth violence/suicide prevention.
More recently, Anthony has established himself as a consultant in the area of safety motivation. He has also held a number of roles in leadership training, facilitation and organization development. Anthony has a particular interest in how people apply what they have learnt in professional development to their work context. During 2006-7 Anthony has conducted follow-up interviews of graduates of Deakin University’s 2006 Healthy Cities and Communities Short Course. As a result he has developed a detailed working knowledge of the issues facing Healthy Cities Short Course participants as they grapple with the challenges of implementation. Anthony’s involvement has also played a significant role by informing and refining the structure and process of the 2007 course. The project’s findings are also anticipated to inform the way Deakin as a whole engages the broader community in its commitment to lifelong learning.
