Improving Health and Quality of Life with improved nutrition in residential care establishments
Thank you for your interest in this project. It has now been completed.
If you would like to view publications arising from this project, view here (23KB).
What are the aims of this project?
• To assess any additional effectiveness of multi-vitamin supplements on nutritional status.
• To assess the long-term effects of the refined nutrition intervention on the rate of falls, incidence of pressure ulcers, bone density, and nutritional markers in blood (vitamin D, albumin, folate, vitamin B12, homocystine and zinc).
How is the project being conducted?
Study 1: Assess plate waste and dietary intake of residents
Study 2: Double-blind placebo controlled trial of multi-vitamin supplementation: effect on nutritional status (blood sample, body weight), and functional status (bone density, hand grip strength, walking test).
Study 3: Intervention program testing the effects of 6 month fortified foods (custard, mashed potato and soup) and milk (with added calcium, vitamin D and folate) on nutritional and functional status.

Who will participate and where will they come from?
Aged-care residents living at McKellar Centre, Peter Street and John Rob House.
Why is this project significant?
• It is difficult to obtain sufficient protein, vitamins and minerals as we get older.
• Dietary requirements for nutrients are increased, yet food intake decreases with aging.
